Amateur radio, often called Ham Radio is typically both a hobby and a public service. The word amateur does not mean that the individuals who participate in amateur radio are unskilled. It simply means that an amateur radio operator cannot use radio communications for commercial purposes or monetary gain.
To become an amateur radio operator in the United States, one must obtain a license by passing an examination. There are three classes of amateur radio licenses--each with their own examination requirements.
